Notley Tythe Barn Weddings — Page 4
I love the reception at Notley Tythe Barn. The barn interior is stunning for evening photography — fairy lights strung between the oak beams, candles on the tables, the whole room glowing. By this point in the day the formality has gone, everyone is happy and relaxed, and the real celebration begins. It's my favourite kind of photography — just people being joyful, and me trying to keep up with it.
The napkin-waving entrance is one of those moments I always look forward to. Guests on their feet, napkins in the air, the couple walking in to a wall of noise and joy. It's chaotic and wonderful and it produces some of the most joyful photographs of the whole day. I always position myself to catch the couple's faces and the guests' reactions at the same time — you need both to tell the story properly.
The top table before the speeches is always worth photographing. The couple sitting together for the first time as husband and wife, the flowers, the place settings, that particular mix of relief and happiness on everyone's faces. There's something very tender about those quiet minutes before the best man stands up, and I always make sure I'm there for them.
Speeches are always a highlight. The best man, the father of the bride, the groom — there are always tears and laughter in equal measure, and I make sure I'm in the right place to catch every reaction. I'm watching the guests as much as the person speaking, because the best moments happen fast and you only get one chance. A good speech photograph captures the whole room, not just the person at the microphone.
Once the first dance is done and the floor opens up, the energy in that barn is something else entirely. I stay late and I keep shooting, because the evening photographs are some of the best of the whole day. At Notley Tythe Barn, with those fairy lights and that beautiful space, they're always something really special. The dancing, the laughter, the groomsmen who've had a few too many — all of it.
I genuinely love photographing weddings at Notley Tythe Barn in the evening. The light gets warmer and moodier, the guests get looser and more themselves, and the photographs get better and better. If you're getting married here and you're wondering whether to extend your photography into the evening — do it. You won't regret it.
The first dance at Notley Tythe Barn is always one of the most emotional moments of the day. The checkered dance floor, the neon sign, the guests gathered around the edges — it's a beautiful space for those intimate, tender photographs. I try to capture both the couple and the guests watching, because the expressions on people's faces during a first dance tell their own story. There are always tears. Always.
The cake cutting is always a fun one. That moment of anticipation before the knife goes in, the couple trying to look composed, the guests craning to see. I always make sure I'm in position for the reaction shot — because that's the one that always makes people laugh when they look back at their photographs years later. It's a small moment but it's always worth getting right.
