Wedding photography at Rackleys Barn
One of the things I love most about Rackleys Barn is the way this venue feels absolutely beautiful without making a wedding feel overly formal.
The countryside provides a gorgeous backdrop, while the venue itself gives you plenty of beautiful and rustic spaces in which to celebrate with the people who matter most. Plenty of opportunities for photographs are naturally created throughout the day, without your wedding having to revolve around them.
That is really important to me.
Your wedding day isn’t a photoshoot.
Months may have been spent planning everything. The flowers will have been chosen, the dress carefully picked, the food picked, the first dance track chosen and the invites all sent out.
Then, suddenly, the day arrives.
You should be talking to your friends, laughing with your family and enjoying every minute. Your drink should be drank, your food should be eaten while it’s still warm and, when the music starts, you should be throwing some shapes on the dancefloor.
I’ll be there quietly documenting what is happening around you.
The photographs will be taken without your day being constantly interrupted.

Having photographed many weddings at Rackleys Barn, the venue is already very familiar to me.
The different areas, the grounds, the light and the opportunities that can be found throughout the day are all things I’ve become accustomed to. That experience can be really useful because your wedding day isn’t spent with me trying to work out where everything is.
Instead, my attention can be kept on you and your guests.
Of course, that doesn’t mean your wedding will be photographed in exactly the same way as anyone else’s. Quite the opposite.
Over more than 15 years, I’ve seen just how differently people celebrate. Some couples are happiest right in the middle of a huge party, while others prefer something much smaller and more intimate. A few people absolutely love having their photograph taken. Others would happily hide behind a plant if they thought I wouldn’t notice!
There really is no right or wrong way to have your photographs taken.
My job is to work with you, rather than try to turn your day into a phootoshoot. 
Natural documentary wedding photography
My style is natural, relaxed and documentary wedding photography.
Rather than spending the day looking for perfect poses, I’m watching for the moments that happen naturally.
The look on your dad’s face when he sees you for the first time.
Your bridesmaids laughing while you’re getting ready.
The slightly nervous smile before the ceremony.
A hug from your mum.
Your partner trying desperately not to cry.
Friends making each other laugh during the drinks reception.
A quiet moment shared between the grandparents.
Then, later in the evening, the inevitable chaos on the dance floor!
Those are the photographs that tell the real story of a wedding day.
Because the moments are allowed to happen naturally, you don’t have to spend your day worrying about creating them. I’ll be watching, anticipating and quietly capturing what is happening around you.
Gentle guidance will be offered whenever it is needed, particularly during the couple photographs, formal shots and confetti shots.
“We’re really awkward in photographs!”
This is something I’m told all the time.
“We’re really awkward in front of the camera.”
Honestly, don’t worry.
You don’t need to know how to pose. There is no expectation for you to suddenly become professional models just because you’re getting married!
When your couple photographs are taken at Rackleys Barn, a little gentle direction will be given if you need it. Usually, we’ll have a wander, chat about the day and enjoy a few quiet minutes together away from everyone else.
The camera will be there, but it shouldn’t feel like you’re performing for it.
Natural reactions are much more interesting to me than a perfectly positioned hand or a forced smile. The photographs should look like you.
Making the most of the Buckinghamshire countryside
The countryside around Rackleys Barn gives us some beautiful opportunities for wedding photographs.
Later in the day is often a favourite time for me, especially when the light begins to soften. Everything can change quite dramatically as the sun moves, and a completely different atmosphere can be created within just a few minutes.
Sometimes beautiful sunshine will appear.
On other days, soft cloudy skies provide the perfect light.
Then there are those wonderfully British days when dramatic clouds arrive and nobody quite knows what the weather is planning next!
Whatever the weather decides to do, beautiful photographs can still be created.
You won’t need to disappear from your guests for an hour, either. Usually, just a few minutes away from everyone is enough. A little walk, a chat and some photographs can be fitted naturally into the day before you’re brought back to the people who are there to celebrate with you.
The photographs you didn’t know were being taken
This is probably my favourite part of being a documentary wedding photographer.
Yes, the photographs where everyone is looking at the camera are important. They absolutely have their place.
Sometimes, though, the photographs that become the most treasured are the ones you didn’t even realise were being taken.
Your mum watching you during the speeches.
Your dad laughing with an old friend.
A bridesmaid quietly wiping away a tear.
Your partner looking across the room at you.
Your friends completely losing themselves on the dance floor.
Those little moments happen once and are gone within seconds.
Because of that, I am constantly watching what is happening around me. People, relationships, reactions and those tiny interactions that might only last for a moment are all being looked for.
I’m not simply waiting for the next item on the wedding schedule.
I’m waiting for the photographs that will bring those feelings back years later.
The important photographs are still important
Being a documentary wedding photographer doesn’t mean the traditional wedding photographs are forgotten.
Of course, photographs will be taken of the two of you together. Your family will be included, along with bridesmaids, groomsmen and all the people who are important to you.
Those photographs will be organised efficiently so that you’re not left standing around for ages while everyone tries to find Uncle Dave!
Once the essential group photographs have been taken, you’ll be free to get back to enjoying yourselves.
The idea is simple: the photographs should be part of your wedding day, rather than becoming the whole day.
Autumn and winter weddings at Rackleys Barn
There is something particularly lovely about an autumn or winter wedding in Buckinghamshire.
The countryside can look completely different, beautiful soft light can be found and a wonderfully cosy atmosphere is often created as everyone comes together.
