One of the things I love about Rackleys Barn is that it gives you a beautiful setting without making your wedding feel overly formal.

You’ve got stunning surrounding  countryside, lovely spaces for your celebrations and plenty of opportunities for photos, but you can still spend the majority of your day enjoying yourself with your nearest and dearest.

You’ve probably spent months planning it and chosen the flowers, the dress, the music and all those little details that nobody else knows how much time you’ve spent thinking about.

Then your wedding day finally arrives.

I don’t want you spending it standing in front of my camera but I want you talking to your friends.

 Laughing with your family.and enjoying your food, having a drink and getting on the dance floor.

I’ve photographed many weddings at Rackleys Barn

One of the advantages of choosing a photographer who already knows the venue is that I know Rackleys Barn very well.

I’ve photographed many different weddings there, so I’m familiar with the setting, the different areas of the venue and the opportunities it gives us throughout the day.

That doesn’t mean I’ll photograph your wedding in exactly the same way as the last one.

Quite the opposite.

One of the best things about photographing weddings for so many years is seeing how differently couples celebrate.

Some couples are incredibly outgoing and have a huge party.

Others are quieter and want something much more intimate.

Some love being photographed.

Others would quite happily hide from the camera all day! Which sound like me when my teenagers are around with their phones!

There is no right or wrong.

My job is to work with you rather than try to turn you into somebody you’re not.

Natural documentary wedding photography

My approach to wedding photography is very natural and documentary.

I don’t spend the day looking for perfect poses.

I’m looking for real moments.

The look on your dad’s face when he sees you.

Your bridesmaids laughing while you’re getting ready.

Your partner trying desperately not to cry during the ceremony.

A hug from your mum.

Friends making each other laugh during the drinks reception.

A quiet moment between grandparents.

The chaos that inevitably happens on the dance floor later in the evening!

These are the photographs that tell the story of your big day.

And because they happen naturally, you don’t have to spend your day worrying about creating them. I capture the true spirit of your wedding day.  Discreet but I offer gentle guidance when needed.

This is probably one of the things I hear most often from couples.

Honestly, don’t worry about it.

You don’t have to be good at having your photograph taken. You’re not models, and I’m certainly not expecting you to suddenly turn into professional models just because you’re getting married!

When we head off for your couple photographs at Rackleys Barn, I’ll give you a little direction if you need it. Nothing too formal and nothing that feels awkward or forced.

Mostly, we’ll just have a little wander and chat.

You’ll probably laugh at some point because it does feel a bit strange having someone walking around with a camera pointed at you. And that’s exactly when some of my favourite photographs tend to happen.

I don’t want you looking back at your wedding photographs and feeling like you were told where to stand for every single one.

I want them to feel like you.

Making the most of the countryside

One of the lovely things about Rackleys Barn is the countryside around it. There are some beautiful places to wander off to for a few photographs, especially later in the day when the light starts to soften.

And the light really does make such a difference.

Sometimes we get glorious sunshine. Sometimes it’s soft and cloudy. Every now and then, we get those big dramatic skies where you’re wondering whether the heavens are about to open!

It’s Britain. We never quite know what we’re going to get.

Whatever the weather decides to do, we’ll make the most of it.

Please don’t feel as though you need to disappear from your guests for ages either. You really don’t.

Usually, just a few minutes is enough.

We can have a little walk, chat about how your day is going, take some lovely photographs and then you can get straight back to your friends and family.

The photographs you didn’t know I was taking

This is honestly one of my favourite things about being a documentary wedding photographer.

Of course, the photographs where everyone is looking at the camera are important. You’ll want those family photographs, the beautiful portraits and the photographs of the two of you together.

But sometimes, the photographs that really get you are the ones you didn’t even know were being taken.

It might be your mum watching you during the speeches, your dad laughing with an old friend, or your bridesmaid trying hard not to cry.

Perhaps it’s your partner looking across the room at you while you’re busy chatting to someone else, or your friends completely letting go on the dance floor.

Those little moments can be so precious because they’re completely real. You weren’t asked to smile or look a certain way — you were just being yourselves, surrounded by the people you love.

And years from now, those are often the photographs that make you stop for a moment and think, “Oh, I remember this.”

Not just for the big things happening on the schedule, but for the little things happening between people.

The looks, hugs laughter and reactions.

All those tiny bits of your wedding day that you might not notice at the time.

And honestly, that’s the stuff I love photographing most.

The important photographs are still important

Being a documentary wedding photographer doesn’t mean I’ll forget about the traditional photographs.

We’ll absolutely get those too.

You’ll have beautiful photographs of the two of you, your family, your bridesmaids, your groomsmen and all the people who are important to you.

Those photographs matter. They’re the ones that will end up in frames, albums and on the walls at home.

I just don’t want them to take over your whole day.

The group photographs will be kept nice and simple. I’ll get everyone together, organise things as quickly as I can and keep things moving.

There’s no need for you to spend half an hour standing around while somebody disappears looking for Uncle Dave!

Once they’re done, you can get back to your champagne, your guests and enjoying yourselves.

Autumn and winter weddings

There’s something I really love about autumn and winter weddings in Buckinghamshire.

The countryside looks completely different, the light can be gorgeous and there’s often such a lovely, cosy feeling when everyone is gathered together.

A dramatic sky can be beautiful.

So can soft winter light.

Even a little bit of rain can make a photograph feel really atmospheric.

You definitely don’t need sunshine for beautiful wedding photographs.

Weekday weddings

Things rarely go completely to plan.

Someone will probably be late.

Something will probably get lost.

The weather might decide to do something completely unexpected.

The timings might change.

And somebody will almost certainly have a little too much fun on the dance floor!

But that’s wedding days.

And actually, those unexpected little moments often end up being some of the best ones.
